Thyristor Switched Power Factor Correction Equipment
Thyristor switched power factor correction equipment is used to compensate the reactive power in three-phase power supply systems with frequent fast load changes.
An example is industrial plants with highly dynamic drive technology installed.
Thyristors are used in place of mechanical contractors to switch pfc capacitor banks in and out. This means that there is no wear of mechanical contacts or components making the system highly reliable under such dynamic conditions.
Furthermore, the thyristor based switching system is able to employ soft switching techniques by switching capacitor banks only at the zero voltage crossing. This eliminates switching transients and flicker.
