Monitoring electric, magnetic, near and far electromagnetic fields

Released: 1/04/2009

This short technical note describes an electric, magnetic and electromagnetic field analyser suitable for a very wide range of applications. The instrument, the TAOMA field analyser is capable of measurements from 15 Hz to 30 MHz by switching probes that are supplied with this single instrument as standard.

The instrument has been used on applications such as the investigation of medium voltage power fields on the growth of soy seedlings (showing an average length increase in excess of 7% at field strengths in the region of 2000 Volts/metre and higher) and the study of non-thermal effects on human subjects as a result of exposure to power line fields.

Numerical techniques and their associated computer programs for the calculation of field characteristics can be a useful aid for designers of transmission lines and towers as well as for environmental protection authorities. Theoretical calculations were then contrasted against practical measurements in HV substations with the TAOMA field analyser.

In the life sciences investigations made include the effects of electromagnetic fields on polychromatic erythrocytes in bone marrow of mice and the influence on myelin shields of nerve fibres

The Taoma universal electro-magnetic field analyser incorporates the Microsoft ‘Windows’ CE.NET operating system thus making the instrument ideal for data analysis in the field without requiring connection to a separate computer.

Temperature and humidity sensors and a GPS module providing exact physical location of the measurements are provided as standard. The Taoma electro-magnetic field analyser is available with an optional GPRS module permitting remote data transmission. Other standard interfaces supplied include RS232 (electrical or optical), USB, Ethernet (RJ-45), and SD card slot as well as a 0-5 Volt scanning input. The Taoma analyser has a data memory of 512 MB thus allowing the on-board storage of up to 250 hours of measurement results. Results can be displayed as instantaneous, average, and maximum values or as amplitude-time variations. The Taoma electro-magnetic field analyser has a VGA 6.4 inch TFT display, alphanumerical keyboard with specific function access keys integrated navigational trackball.

The probes supplied as standard with the Taoma electromagnetic field analyser include magnetic induction (B) from 15 Hz to 100 kHz; electric field (E) in the range of 15 Hz to 100 kHz; E fields in the range of 100 kHz to 6 GHz; E fields in the range of 3 MHz to 18 GHz; and magnetic strength (H) fields in the range 300 kHz to 30 MHz.

In sum, the Tamoa analyser is a single instrument with a wide scope of applications by virtue of the bandwidth covered and the analyser is therefore very useful for scientists in many disciplines as well as research and design engineers and technicians.
