Harmonic mitigation and power factor correction solutions from Westek Electronics for a leaner and greener Australia

"The fact is that much electrical energy generated is wasted in losses caused by harmonics!

The fact is that excess copper is designed-in for many commercial building electrical installations to cope with harmonics!

The fact is that harmonic voltage distortion is responsible for IT and process control computer malfunctions!

The fact is that harmonics mitigation and power factor correction reduce our carbon footprint!"

Commercial and industrial electrical installations these days have to cope with mainly harmonic-rich currents—in other words, highly distorted current. Loads such as variable speed drive for mechanical services, electronic ballasts and IT equipment in commercial buildings are the chief cause. In industrial plant, variable speed drives, robotic welders, induction heaters, electrolytic plating, etc. are frequent culprits. In addition harmonics plus reactive loads make for poor power factors thus frequently attracting penalty charges from electricity suppliers.

Effective mitigation of harmonics and improving power factor is a job for experts. We at Westek Electronics can work with you and your consulting engineers, on appropriate mitigation measures—we do not market single solutions!

At Westek we know that cleaning up voltage and current distortion and minimising electrical energy losses requires multi-targeted approaches to reticulation systems. We have available an armory comprising of:

  • Chokes

  • Linear, passive harmonic filters

  • Active filters.

Rather than selling product, we sell solutions and we do this by providing suitable power line analysers, capable of providing a comprehensive picture of harmonics and other power disturbance. After site analysis can offer solutions by sitting down with your engineers, looking at the reticulation line diagrams, evaluating the possibility of segregating certain loads, taking account of load variability and then provide you with appropriate measures including MTE broadband filters and chokes, and Schaffner ECOSine active filters.
